To coincide with British Science Week 2020, Royal Holloway launched a free, four-week online course; Understanding Biological Energy - on the leading social learning platform, FutureLearn.com.
The course is designed for young people who have studied GCSE science – chemistry, biology or physics – and in particular those who have an interest in the connections between these subjects and going on to study science at university. Young people who take the course will find out how biological energy is gained and used by living things, and what advances in agriculture mean for feeding the world’s growing population.
Dr James McEvoy, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway said: “I’m really looking forward to teaching this online course. Biological energy is a big topic that touches so many fields, from agriculture and biofuels to metabolism and physiology. Understanding the energetic connections between them allows us to think about things like diabetes and renewable energy in new ways. Students who take the course will gain that understanding, and I hope they will use it to help solve some of our world’s energetic challenges.”
