We provide wide-ranging and intellectually stimulating undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
Teaching and research in the Classics Department covers the full variety of the Classical syllabus. Our staff are committed teachers and leading international researchers in their many and varied fields. We develop our students through their undergraduate programmes, into our graduate programmes at MA, all the way up to PhD. The department has a track record of attracting significant research projects and enjoys access to the world-class research resources of the University of London.
We pride ourselves on our research-led teaching which combines our strong disciplinary research areas (archaeology, history, and literature) and our commitment to an engaged Classics that tackles current themes. We take Classics into the community, with talks, resources, and other materials (see our fantastic Classics schools and outreach hub). We also host two important research centres, the Centre for Oratory and Rhetoric (COR) and Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome (CRGR).
As a Department, we work closely with and are part of the School of Humanities, which also houses the Departments of History, English and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Working together allows us to develop and apply a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches in our research and teaching. The School is based in the International Building on Royal Holloway’s spectacular campus.
