Electronic Engineering is a dynamic and diverse community of undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff with a real sense of camaraderie between staff and students.
The high levels of satisfaction from our students are reflected in league tables, where our department is ranked 1st for student experience and 1st for teaching quality in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2024. We are also placed 1st for student satisfaction and 1st for student continuation in the Complete University Guide, 2024.
In summer 2024 we received the results of our student feedback in the latest National Student Survey (NSS), revealing positive feedback in key areas. Head of Department Dr Steve Alty summarised “The NSS 2024 results place us overall first among all the other Electronic Engineering departments in the UK, and we’re delighted to receive such positive feedback from our students about their learning experiences. We have performed consistently well in the NSS and this is a testament to our friendly, supportive environment and dedicated team of staff and technicians. One of the key reasons our students report satisfaction is that they find our courses intellectually stimulating and they feel that our assessments allow them to demonstrate what they have learned.”

“I chose RHUL for a number of reasons, one of which was simply the beautiful campus. Originally I had applied for Computer Science, but when I met the people in the Electronic Engineering Department and understood what they are all about, I realised it was what I had to do. I could tell that the staff designing this course were clearly very passionate about engineering and teaching the students valuable skills, which has resulted in the course developing and improving over time.
My favourite parts of the course were the many group projects, allowing us to develop our engineering skills practically and working with many different students, as well as the great support the staff are able to give.
I am now working at the National Grid, and Royal Holloway has prepared me well for this. I acquired a broad understanding of varying engineering disciplines, enabling me to get a job in a wide selection of business areas, while still enabling me to explore the modules I find interesting.”
George, MEng Electronic Engineering with a Year in Industry
"My experience here at Royal Holloway has been nothing other than positive. One of the most unique things about the Electronic Engineering department here at Royal Holloway is the close relationships students have built with the academic staff and the personal interest each lecturer takes with each and every one of their students. It is an environment where questions are always welcome and answered, and students never feel patronised. The challenges this course presents are always interesting, and the support of the department makes anything feel possible."
Maria, BEng Electronic Engineering
"I chose Royal Holloway because the MSc Engineering Management matched perfectly with what I was looking for. It provided me with the skills and tools to improve my future career as an engineer, and I gained extensive knowledge in subjects that really interest me such as Renewable Technologies and Technology Management. I’ve made strong friendships that I’m sure will last forever."
Delfina, MSc Engineering Management
"My experience at Royal Holloway has been truly amazing. I’ve loved every second of it and the lecturers were extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this MSc programme to any new budding scientists or engineers who are looking to get into a management position within a company, as key life skills will be taught through this MSc."
Natasha, MSc Engineering Management
"I pursued a career in software engineering before joining the MSc in Project Management at Royal Holloway. I’ve learnt skills from professors who are scholars in their fields and this course has not only boosted my self-confidence but also has opened new doors. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a career as a project manager and to study in a place which feels like a home away from home."
Chhavi, MSc Project Management
