The Department of Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway, University of London has been formally accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for their electronic engineering degree programmes.
The announcement on 9 March follows a virtual visit and a satisfactory assessment by the IET accreditation panel involving a review of the department’s staffing, laboratory facilities, industrial influence, teaching curriculum and learning outcomes against internationally defined standards of quality and academic rigour.
Accredited status means that graduates of Royal Holloway’s BEng and MEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering degrees fulfil the educational requirements for registering as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) following a few years of employment.
Head of Electronic Engineering, Professor David M Howard FREng said,
“Accreditation success means that our approach to electronic engineering education is acknowledged as being appropriate for the training of tomorrow’s chartered engineers; something we are very proud of and firmly believe in.
I am delighted that the IET gave special recognition to our emphasis on creativity and design as an outstanding aspect of our programmes and how this manifests in the high proportion of creative team project work for our students, and they also commended the Beatrice Shilling Building as providing an excellent environment for student projects.
Of particular note is that the IET accreditation extends for five year until 2026 which is an achievement for a young department such as ours, and we are very pleased that it is also backdated to our first BEng student cohort in 2017 who graduated in Summer 2020.“
Dr Steve Alty, Director of Teaching in the Department of Electronic Engineering added,
"The award of IET accreditation demonstrates that what we teach, how we teach it and the mix of activities we engage in at Royal Holloway is valuable and relevant to the education of up-and-coming professional electronic engineers.”
Professional accreditation for engineering degrees is managed by the relevant UK engineering professional body on behalf of the UK Engineering Council; for electronic engineering this is the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
