This partnership is funded under GRCF Grant GCRFNGR8\1181 to create and maintain an international Network of researchers to work on reducing the public health risk of antimicrobial resistance spread through aquaculture value chain
Members of Health Studies Department, Royal Holloway University of London (Dr Jennifer Cole and Dr Mahmoud Eltholth) leading a workshop in Kenya with partners from the University of Eldoret and other Kenyan institutes
The Network is led by Dr Salinah Rono, a Medical Microbiologist from the Fish Genetics and Genomics Research and Training Laboratory, University of Eldoret, Kenya and Dr Jennifer Cole, a Biological Anthropologist from the Department of Health Studies, Royal Holloway University of London, with a starting membership of Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (KMFI), Government of Kenya State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Blue Economy, Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Yerevan State Medical University, Armenia, and University of West London, UK.
The key aims of the Network:
- Create a strong and sustainable international Network of researchers (including Early Career Researchers and PhDs) to address the challenges of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) spread through aquaculture, food fish trade and fish consumption.
- Support and capacity build Global North and LMICs researchers working on fish genomics and genetics, in particular Whole Genome Sequencing.
- Support and capacity build Global North and LMICs researchers to evidence the links between fish consumption, nutritional outcomes, and foodborne disease risk.
- Support and capacity build Global North and LMICs researchers to evidence hotspots of emergence and transmission risk of AMR in aquaculture, food fish trade and fish consumption.
- Build consortia to bid for UKRI, GCRF and other international funding calls throughout 2023-24 to maintain the Network beyond the current funding.
