Congratulations to Professor Dan Stone, the winner of this year’s Doctoral Supervision Award, which recognises excellent performance and conduct in doctoral supervision at Royal Holloway.
Professor Stone is praised for his distinctive supervisory work and strong support for doctoral candidates within the Holocaust Research Institute, where he also provides seminars and workshops. He has an impressive track record of helping students publish and of giving his students the opportunity to get work experience through the biannual summer conference. He is applauded for providing very good careers advice and encouraging international networking.
Prof. Stone has supervised 18 PhDs successfully to completion (Wolf 2006, Probst 2008, Holmila 2008, Miéville Smith 2008, Kakel 2008. Pearce 2010, Jinks 2013, Carey 2014, Carey 2014, Rich 2014, Wennberg 2015, Mulhall 2016, Humphrey 2017, Gordon 2017, Lambertz 2018, Ben Aharon 2019, Sherwood 2019, Bland 2019) and currently supervises 9 (Hesz-Wood, Teale, Dalziel, White, Smith, Pierce, Argiantopoulos, Parkinson and Lipner). Supervising PhD students has been one of the key components of his academic profile for 15 years, and supporting upcoming scholars is a key part of his role as Director of the Holocaust Research Institute.
His students say of him:
"Dan is an incredibly generous PhD supervisor and I can’t recommend him highly enough!" Dr Michelle Gordon
"My Royal Holloway experience was magnificent thanks to Dan Stone." Dr Jan Lambertz
"He creates a research environment that allows his students to develop highly individual ways of researching, writing, and (most importantly) thinking about the past - a fact illustrated clearly by the diverse array of work that has been produced by doctoral students lucky enough to be supervised by him. " Dr Ben Bland
