Teaching Mathematics as a Career

  • Date19 January 2022

The Mathematics Department has signed up to the Code of Practice of the London Mathematical Societies Teaching Mathematics as a Career (TeMaC) initiative, which aims to support Mathematics departments to encourage their students, undergraduate and postgraduate, to embark on a career in teaching.

The mathematics department has a strong tradition in supporting students who want to become mathematics teachers. We run a yearly module “Mathematics in the Classroom” for students interested in a teaching career, and our students volunteer in tutoring schemes like the Brilliant Club and Coach Bright. In addition, many of our members of staff give numerous outreach talks at local schools, and the department hosts the popular Exploring Mathematics Event at Royal Holloway every Summer. We plan to organise careers events for our undergraduate students, where we invite former students who are now working as mathematics teachers.

The LMS TeMaC Code of Practice is designed to help departments to develop a systematic approach to activities helping students to explore pathways into the teaching profession.

It will give the mathematics department more visibility in the four pillars of the scheme:

  • Information/Dissemination
  • Teaching in Schools
  • Outreach
  • Departmental Links to School Teaching

We will also be taking part in TeMaC’s networking events to exchange examples of good practise with delegates from other mathematics de
