Members of the Algebra Group at Royal Holloway are interested in various aspects of Group Theory and its relations to other subject areas, such as, for example, Combinatorics and Topology.
The members of the group are involved in the cross-disciplinary research centre CANTA at Royal Holloway, and in the LMS Scheme 3 research network on Functor Categories for Groups, joint with the Universities of Cambridge, Lancaster, and Lincoln.
The group has collaborations with researchers in the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the US.
Members & Interests
Dr Yiftach Barnea:
I am interested in pro-p groups and related algebraic structure like: residually finite groups, profinite groups, finite p-groups, totally disconnected locally compact groups, algebraic groups and Lie groups over local fields, and Lie algebras. My research is mainly dedicated to study asymptotic behaviour of various growth functions, like subgroup growth. However, I also studied structural questions like the classification of maximal graded subalgebras of affine Kac-Moody algebras and the structure of the abstract commensurators of profinite groups.
Dr Aditi Kar:
I am interested in Geometric Group Theory, which studies the structure of infinite groups via their actions on geometric spaces.
Professor Brita Nucinkis:
My research is in cohomological and geometric properties of groups, using methods from homological algebra, algebraic topology and geometric group theory. Currently, I am studying Mackey functors for profinite and totally disconnected locally compact groups, as well as properties of generalised Thompson groups.
Professor Mark Wildon:
My main research interest is the representation theory of symmetric group and related algebras. This subject sees an attractive interplay of ideas from algebra and combinatorics, and has many easily stated but deep open problems. I have also published papers on searching games, Brownian motion, and enumerative combinatorics (counting things!).
