Tuba

Carl has always enjoyed teaching and coaching alongside his performance work and he also teaches at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music. A number of previous pupils have gained music scholarships to leading music departments as well as entry to national ensembles and places at junior conservatoires. Carl studied at the Royal Academy of Music with sponsorship from EMI Music, having completed a music degree specialising in film music, history and performance at Royal Holloway prior to that. On completion of his studies, he was selected as an apprentice tuba player by the London Philharmonic Orchestra before benefiting from further study via the Britten-Pears foundation, Aldeburgh.

As a performer, Carl has performed with the London Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and also with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He has played in orchestras on European tours and as far as Australia with the London Symphony Orchestra, directed by Sir Simon Rattle in venues including Sydney Opera House. Carl has also recorded at Abbey Road, Air and Rak studios including material for the band Bastille. He has performed on set for film and tv including The Crown (Elstree Studios/location), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (LH2/Leavesden Studios), The Ipcress File (location) and Military Wives (Pinewood Studios). He has played on soundtrack recordings for film and tv including Jonathan Glazer’s Channel 4 rebrand (music composed by Mica Levi), Interview with the Vampire (Sony), Beau is Afraid (A24 films) as well as contributing tuba recordings for use in the sound design of The Zone of Interest (A24 films).
