Founded in 2020 with funding from the British Academy, the Gender Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London looks to become a hub for study, teaching, learning, and activism about gender and sexuality on campus.
The Gender Institute is here to support and augment activity in gender and sexuality studies on campus. It offers chances for students to collaborate with faculties and fellow students on gender research and to participate in the Institute’s ongoing research projects, teaching projects, and activism on campus and beyond. The Institute also aims to expand gender inclusivity on campus, providing a forum for input and discussion, and the opportunity for student organisations to have their say.
The Institute has three primary goals: to support academic staff and student research and research collaboration in the study of genders and sexualities, to support teaching and learning of and around genders and sexualities, and to produce resources for community engagement and impact around genders and sexualities. We hope to do this through research conversations, support for seeking external funding, support for integrating genders and sexualities into modules and programs, and a detailed and up-to-date list of relevant resources. The Gender Institute is also open to other ways that we can be supportive of the work of the Royal Holloway community with regards to genders and sexualities.
As such, Institute is not only limited to students and academic staff. We hope that all employees at Royal Holloway as well as researchers outside of the College feel welcome at our events and in our conversations. We are going to be developing mechanisms that contribute to the workplaces of all the members of our internal and external communities. We welcome any ideas about how we can best do that.
The Gender Institute is active on social media platforms, notably on Twitter (@genderrhul). We will be expanding our online presence to emphasize the ways in which people may wish to get involved with the Institute. We hope to host events, including a seminar series, teach-in events and speakers relevant to the students and staff interested in gender and sexuality issues on campus; in classrooms; in their disciplines of work, study or research; and in the world more broadly.
