Tuition fee reduction up to £12,000 for selected Masters degrees within Computer Science and Information Security. 

One scholarship is available to a full-time or part-time student with Home or International fee status, studying one of the courses listed below. 

The scholarship was set up in memory of Professor Mike Walker OBE, a name synonymous with the Information Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway. 

Professor Walker joined Royal Holloway in 1966 and he successfully completed his BSc in Mathematics, before becoming the second PhD student to be supervised by Professor Fred Piper, who founded the ISG. He obtained his PhD in 1973.

Throughout his career in industry, Professor Walker maintained his keen interest for academic research and for many years he held the Vodafone chair as Professor of Telecommunications at Royal Holloway, as part of the ISG. In 2002, Professor Walker was instrumental in founding the ISG Smart Card Centre which continues today.

This scholarship is provided as a tuition fee reduction. If your course fee is less than £12,000, only the fee will be covered (no additional cash award will be made). 

Am I eligible?

  • Offer to study one of the following courses: 
    • MSc Information Security
    • MSc Information Security with a Year in Industry
    • MSc Computer Science by Research
    • MSc Artificial Intelligence
    • MSc Computational Finance
    • MSc Data Science and Analytics
    • MSc Machine Learning
  • Achieved, or be expected to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent
  • Applying for your first Masters degree
  • Able to demonstrate financial need (i.e. unable to undertake further study without the financial support of the scholarship).

If you've applied, we'll let you know from Monday 8 July 2024 if you've been successful. 

You must provide a supporting statement of no more than 400 words, which should include: 

  • academic achievements and other activities you are particularly proud of, and why these really matter to you
  • why you have chosen to do the degree you have applied for
  • your future aspirations and how the scholarship will help you achieve these and contribute to society
  • from a financial standpoint, what impact this scholarship would have on your education
  • any special personal or family circumstances affecting your requirement for financial assistance.

Your statement will be judged on how effectively and convincingly you respond to the above. 

Applications which exceed the word count will automatically be rejected.
